It’s Valentine’s Day, and I can’t think of anything more romantic than a little D-II basketball discussion. Um, yeah.
Anyway, this is as good a time as any to unveil what I’m going to call the South Region Tracker, for lack of a better term. I’m going to rank each of the NCAA tournament-qualified South Region teams each week, just like the official selection committee does. I have a page set up in the basketball section under “06-07 HU stats,” and on that page, I will list my rankings, the teams, and their records for overall games, in-region games, and conference games. Qualifiers must be at .500 or better (both overall and in-region) and be on pace to play at least 16 in-region games. I will also include my predicted regional ranking (what I think the selection committee will say) each week until the actual rankings are released (for this week, that’s just a few hours away).
Just for fun, I’ll also track each conference’s record against the other conferences, for the sake of argument over seeding and other such issues. I will also include a “bubble watch” with commentary on the teams that really need a win in order to stay out of the “only in if they win their conference tourney” category. Lastly, I’ll include a week’s worth of upcoming games (the week to be considered in the next regional rankings, 2/12 through 2/18 in the current case).
