Both GSC East teams got past their West division opponents in yesterday’s first-round games at the GSC Tournament in Southaven. Alabama-Huntsville edged Delta State 74-69 in the early evening game, advancing to face Henderson State on Friday. West Georgia took down OBU in the later game, advancing to a certain death matchup against Montevallo when play resumes tomorrow.
So, the field is set for Friday, and here’s the schedule (all times central):
- W1 Henderson State vs. E4 Alabama-Huntsville – 12:30 pm
- E2 Valdosta State vs. W3 Harding – 2:45 pm
- E1 Montevallo vs. E5 West Georgia – 5:30 pm
- W2 Christian Brothers vs. E3 North Alabama – 7:30 pm
Elsewhere in the South Region
Florida Tech beat Florida Southern 64-62 in the 8-vs-9 first-round matchup at the Sunshine State Conference tournament. The SIAC tournament also got underway, with all of the favored teams (Lane, Albany State, Kentucky State, and Miles) winning their first-round games. That’s the way things need to stay in order to get the most deserving GSC teams in the tournament.
The latest regional rankings were also released yesterday, and you can check all that out either by using the link to the left or by visiting the South Region Tracker.
Coming Up
The SIAC will have a half-slate of action today with Lane facing Benedict (go Benedict!) and Stillman facing Albany State. Kentucky State will face Paine (go Kentucky State!) and Miles will face Fort Valley State (go Miles!) tomorrow. The SSC has four games on Friday, so let’s root for one of the big three teams (Barry, Rollins, and Eckerd) to go all the way, with the others hopefully bowing out in the first round.
I’ll be on the road to Memphis during the Harding game, but hopefully I can keep up by phone. I probably won’t have a full basketball update between now and Monday, since I’ll be gone (unless I get the chance to take Melissa’s laptop and find a WiFi hotspot, but I probably won’t be going out of my way). I may try to moblog some quick updates through my phone, but we’ll see.
