Weekly Notes: November 16, 2007

It’s been a big week in sports, with some further cluttering of the BCS landscape, the beginning of the college basketball season, and the good old Hot Stove. And apparently other things are going on outside sports, but you probably don’t care to read about that here. Let’s get started:

• The first two GSC West regular season games were last night with mixed results for the GSC teams involved. ATU pummeled Rhema Bible College without Darren Tarver on the floor, which I guess is impressive. SAU had a scare against Philander Smith, but they won the game. I’m still not expecting much from them.
• Tonight is the start of Harding’s season, which means I’ll have a review tomorrow if everyone has their websites in gear to provide some stats for me. They’ll be in Springfield, MO this weekend taking on Missouri State and UT-Pan American. It’s a tough way to start, but hopefully it will be a learning experience. MSU had three players dismissed this week, but I’m not sure that fully leveled the playing field. Christian Brothers, Delta State, Henderson State, and UAM (at West Virginia!) are all in action tonight.
• As exciting as the start of Harding’s season is, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity that I have to see an NBA game tonight. I’ll be in attendance for the Hawks’ game against the Sonics in Atlanta, where I will mostly think about how good some of those players were in college (Durant, Horford, Shelden Williams, Marvin Williams, Collison, Wilcox, Childress, Salim Stoudamire, etc.). It’s too bad the NBA regular season is mostly insignificant.
• I don’t think the Braves were ever in the running for Mike Lowell, as Yahoo! Sports suggested yesterday. Some things don’t make sense, and others are completely idiotic. Signing Lowell would fall into the latter category for a team that already has Chipper Jones and Mark Teixeira, arguably the best corner infield tandem in baseball.
• A-Rod is still mostly unlikable to me, but he’s not in the same class as Barry Bonds, who was finally indicted yesterday. If only it had happened a season earlier, so that he might not have broken Hank Aaron’s record.
• A final note: If any Chattanooga-area reader is not in regular contact with me and would like a ticket to the UTC-UT basketball game (on Tuesday 12/4), let me know.  I ordered six tickets yesterday, and I’m trying to get a feel for who might want to go.  They’re general admission tickets for the upper deck.
