Braves Chart of the Day: April 15, 2009

Baseball, with its seemingly endless stream of numbers and lengthy season, presents ample opportunities to share many types of data.  In an effort to keep presenting that data in new and interesting ways, I will strive to post one new Braves chart per weekday (Tue-Fri) as a way to spur your thoughts and possibly facilitate discussion about the South’s preeminent baseball team.

Today’s chart compares Braves’ pitchers’ season ERA vs. Fielding-Independent Pitching, which has proven to be a better indicator of future pitching success than ERA itself, since it is based only on pitcher-controlled outcomes (walks, strikeouts, homers).  An ERA higher than FIP indicates probable ERA improvement, while a higher FIP indicates that the pitcher may not be pitching as well as advertised.

Stats are through games of 4/12.

Lowe’s strong start is legit.  Jurrjens, on the other hand, will need to get back his command soon.
